No, not necessarily. You see, Yoga is not contortion and nor is it gymnastics, although I can see why to the ordinary person some photos of Yoga positions could look similar !

It’s not very often that pictures are published of stiff yoga teachers- we just don’t look as photogenic as the really bendy ones! But that doesn’t mean we aren’t achieving as much personally.

Some contortionists are born with conditions that give them extra supple ligaments. Some gymnasts train to stretch theirs to extremes. Neither would be considered a spiritual practise- they confine themselves to the physical.

In Yoga we understand the body is our vessel: we have to therefore assist its health.

But we try to balance the body -not push it to extremes that could ultimately cause harm. So when I identify a weakness in a student I try to determine if it is a result of stiffness in the body or over-flexibility. I teach a lot of very bendy people in pain as a result of over working certain muscles in the body.

So trying to strengthen an area could actually mean learning to gradually reduce over-flexibility!

This week in all my classes I will be teaching this pose- also known as Warrior 1.

It’s a great pose for waking up the body- this especially happens around the pelvis.

We are trying to get the pelvis into an upright position- stopping it from dropping forwards.

If the pelvis becomes diagonal then our lower back starts to over-arch which can cause pain. Instead this pose can help us strengthen our lower back and challenge us to control our posture.

So this week I’ll teach you how to do that, and more, in this pose- I hope you’ll enjoy it!

If you have gone to Yoga classes with more than one teacher you will have noticed that even within the same style of Yoga, each teacher has their own way of doing things. In the Iyengar system our training is so thorough that you will hear the same phrases being used by all of us. But there will still be differences.

Let’s take a simple example like lying down in Savasana (corpse pose) at the end of a class. In one class I’ve been told I ‘must’ have a folded blanket under my head. In another I’ve been told I don’t need one. I can see why this could be seen as confusing for students. In my case, I think it depended on the asanas I had just done. When my chest was more open my head didn’t tilt back so much so less was needed under my head. But I didn’t think that one teacher was ‘right’ and the other one was ‘wrong’. Sometimes the teacher wants us to feel a different effect, but may not spell it out. As a teacher I may learn something that has a huge impact on my own progress, and be eager to pass that information on. I will therefore emphasise a way of doing something differently from someone who has not felt that effect. We need to use our intelligence as students to try both approaches – to feel the interesting differences. I could compare it to learning a musical instrument- two teachers may teach you to play the same piece of music but with different techniques. The end result is a subtle difference but as we become more proficient we make it our own. So our minds and our bodies interpret the different instructions we are given in our own ways.

If you have been coming to my classes recently I will have taught you this wide legged pose called Prasaritta Padottanasana:

For many of us we start like this woman in red- feet wide, legs stretching up and hands on a bit of height to make it easier for us. It’s a great way to stay in the pose – maybe for two or three minutes- the key is to feel the feet spreading and the energy in your legs is being drawn up into your hips. You can even do this with your arms stretching forwards to a chair.
The second stage is trying to extend the trunk in two directions like this woman in purple- she has two helpers- but you get the idea!

If you practice this every day you will soon be able to take the hands to the floor and extend like this. In my opinion it is a much more useful asana than ‘downward dog’ (Adho Mukha Svanasana) for waking up the entire body.

I have given out homework sheets to many of my students with many poses on to try over the holidays…but I am a realist…so if you only have time to do one pose over the break then this is the pose to do!

The end result we are aiming for is like this woman in green- head down and hands back.

Notice that her legs are upright- not leaning forwards or backwards- and her back is slightly rounded. There is weight in her head, hands and feet. We can put blocks under the crown of our head if we can’t quite reach. This pose has the widest leg position of any Yoga standing pose- but that does not mean that you should take your feet too wide! You must feel that you are fully in control of your legs at all times- if you go too wide the feet can feel like they might slip away. A great way to practice this pose is to find a hallway the right width so you can have the outer edge of both feet supported before you go forwards- if your hallway is too wide you can shorten it using Yoga blocks up against the walls.

Let me know how you get on!

We know that Yoga is not like any ‘normal’ exercise- it affects the body and mind in a very different way. But these differences build up with practice. You can practice on your own, at home, for free. I design homework sheets to help with this. And it doesn’t have to be an ‘active’ sequence each time. There are even special poses to do when we are sick. So, ideally Yoga is practised everyday. If we go to a class just once a week we will notice some changes, such as improved posture. It is when we practice more often that we see more changes. When I started Yoga twenty years ago I did just one class a week for the first year, then two the second year and so on.

We’ve all heard people talk about how Yoga has changed their lives- but they find it hard to explain exactly how, so I thought, at risk of sounding silly, I would try:

So here’s a list of the changes I noticed in myself- some may sound a bit strange at first- and, of course, they could be very different for you:

1. When I started practising once a week I noticed my various aches and pains went away.

2. When I started practising twice a week I noticed my sleep improved.

3. When I started practising three times a week I no longer felt the need to smoke.

4. When I started practising four times a week I felt calmer and less stressed.

5. When I started practising five times a week I could concentrate more on everyday tasks.

6. When I started practising six times a week I started to think that maybe I wasn’t an atheist after all.

7. When I started practising seven times a week I felt I had a connection from within myself to the entire universe.

The more I practice the more I realise how important it is that I try and keep my chest as open as possible. Does that sound obvious? An open chest allows us to breathe fully, which brings many health benefits. It can really help our energy levels and boost our immune system (see my previous blog on the thymus gland). Deep breathing stimulates the Parasympathetic nervous system and this causes the body to relax. When the body is relaxed it lets go of muscle tension. Then we can work more deeply both in the asanas and in pranayama.

So why have I not always been opening my chest as fully as I am able? Well, for example, in some twists my emphasis may have been to try and catch my hands behind my back, even though I could feel it was collapsing one side of my chest. Of course there are a few poses like Malasana (the garland) where the chest will not be fully expanded. But now I feel it is my priority to be able to breathe properly – and that means having an open chest. Our lungs can lose their elasticity if we do not exercise them fully. This brings about fatigue and other health problems.

I have felt over the decades of Yoga my chest opening more and more and I have been taught ways to encourage this. Now I teach this to my students I can see the benefits in their practice and day to day life too.

I have recently been asked this question by a student. After all, you can buy lots of CDs and MP3s that say they are for Yoga. So why won’t you find them being played in an Iyengar Yoga class? Well I have a few ideas. When we practice we are supposed to draw the attention inwards. We are supposed to be mindful, not daydreaming. Our minds are not supposed to wander off. This becomes clear by reading the Yoga Sutras. There the the fifth limb of Yoga is discussed: it is ‘Pratyahara’ which can be translated as ‘withdrawal of the senses’.

When I listen to music it most definitely has the opposite effect. If I try to practice Asana (Yoga poses) or Pranayama (Yoga breathing) when music is playing then my mind is not focussed on my body or my breath, but on the music. One of the most common practices to help achieve the withdrawal of the senses is Pranayama. We withdraw from the external and bring our focus inwards towards our breath, as connection with the external senses and stimuli are supposed to be gradually severed. But doesn’t music count as a sensory pleasure? And Yoga is meant to wean us from the sensory pleasures.

You might not know it, but in many North American Yoga studios it has become the norm for students to practice to a special ‘yoga playlist’. And this is gradually being picked up on in Europe as it is often very popular with students. We all love music, don’t we? And it can really help create an ‘atmosphere’ in a room. But our Yoga practice is not like a party. So, I hope that explains why I prefer to keep my music separate from my Yoga practice.

Well, technically, Restorative Yoga focuses on relaxing the body in restful postures. But many familiar asanas can be performed in a way that makes them restorative. For example, this week I’ll be teaching the forward bend, Janu Sirsasana. I’ve been teaching the basics of this pose for the last three weeks. The full pose is quite tricky. This week we’ll do it again, but with our heads resting up on a chair. It will help us lengthen the front of the body and feel the breath move into the chest properly. So, we can use more props and therefore hold poses for longer times to open the body in a more passive way than usual. Some people find it more beneficial as layer after layer of the body gradually opens. Some people find it harder as it can be a challenge to stay still and watch the breath. The body relaxes, releases stress and the nervous system is calmed. In the Iyengar system, it is traditional to teach a restorative class one week a month, though not all teachers do. I feel it is a logical approach to balance our practice: so over a month 25% of our practice is restorative, and 25% active, with the remaining 50% encompassing other poses and breath work that allow us to benefit from a balanced, holistic practice.

click here Rare footage of a medical yoga therapy class at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India

Nowadays only fully certified Iyengar Yoga teachers are allowed to apply to go to the RMIYI in Pune, India. There is a waiting list of around two years, and teachers attend for a whole month. I went there myself in June 2010. Even then, not all teachers are allowed to watch the medical or therapy classes for students with serious health problems. Even fewer are allowed to assist. This clip gives a little taster of what it’s like there- a rare chance to glimpse behind the scenes. It shows Geeta Iyengar (Mr Iyengar’s daughter, who is about 70 years old) teaching. Geeta may seem to be almost shouting at a teacher at one point, but don’t worry, we understand it’s really just the Iyengar family’s efficient way of getting their teachings across!

This is probably the second most common question I’m asked by beginners starting Yoga in January!
(See my previous blogs for the other questions). And it is a question that makes my heart sink….partly because Yoga is supposed to be a spiritual practice and partly because this question is often asked by people who are much thinner than me! Which really makes me think about the pressure in today’s society to look thin. It is causing people to feel awful about themselves, and encouraging low self esteem. Women especially can feel as if their happiness is directly related to how thin they are, which really is sad. This can then have knock on effects like depression. Now, Yoga is great for helping the mind, so if we practise enough Yoga can help with issues like low self esteem. Then we realise there are a lot more important things in life than how much we weigh!
The rise of ‘fitness yoga’ where students go through the motions to sweat and burn calories, is not, in my opinion, an authentic Yoga paractice. It does not effect the mind in the same way. But the way we use our muscles in our practice does create an elongated shape, which visually can gives the body an elegant, slimming effect, whether we lose weight or not.
But a healthy body needs some fat! Fat helps lubricate the joints which is very useful for a healthy yoga practice.
Being too thin is unhealthy, which is an issue I actually see more often in my students than obesity. It is especially important for women at certain stages of life to be a healthy bodyweight. The sort of life-long, long-term dieting that some women torment themselves with, will cause problems with bone density in their 40′s and 50′s, not just in ‘old age’.
The way that Yoga balances the body’s many systems is one of the things that makes it different from other forms of exercise. Practising Yoga balances our thyroid gland and hormones levels, so if you are underweight you may even find that practising Yoga helps you put weight on!
So I think, if you are “worried” about your weight then maybe Yoga is right for you after all, as the physical and mental health benefits from regular practice can really help us realise that ultimately our happiness lies within.

This quality that beginners have is an openness to learn, an inquisitive mind and a thirst to know more. It is a Zen mind! So different from some of us that think we know something already, that judge a class only on something ‘extra’ we may gain. As the saying goes, “it is hard to fill a vessel that is already full”!

So welcome to all the new students- I can’t wait to meet you and teach you and see you make progress every week!

I have been seeing a lot of very stressed students in the build up to these “holidays”.
Unfortunately, for many of us, it can be quite a stressful time.
I give out homework sheets and advise students on their home practice, but I am a realist.
So if there’s only time to do one pose, then this is the one to do in my opinion!
The supported bridge, or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana, shown here as a restorative version, which really helps our stress levels. It opens the chest, supports the back and helps us to breathe and relax. You could try it off a low bed, or on a pile of carefully folded towels or blankets to replicate the support shown. The person here has tied a belt around their ankles and thighs too so they can relax more, but you can try without if you prefer. The first time you try it you might not be able to stay long, but each time you can stay longer than the last. Staying still for ten minutes and watching how the breath expands the chest in all directions will make a real difference to your stress levels this christmas. Good luck!

Don’t be worried if you have never been on a yoga holiday before- this is definitely aimed at those who want a relaxing holiday! Nothing too strenuous, and lots of time to do your own thing. Iyengar yoga is a safe and accessible form of yoga- the world’s most practised form apparently!
The end of May is the perfect time to be on a Greek island- warm enough to swim but not too hot like mid summer can be. The scenery is still green with spring growth too.
Unlike many yoga holidays the venue is not remote- Kissamos Bay is easy to get to from the airport and there are shops, restaurants and cafes all within walking distance of the hotel. So feel free to bring a non-yoga friend to share your room, they’ll find plenty of other local things to do.
With our own pool and the beach I’m hoping to swim every day between classes. We’ll do a 90 minute morning class and the same in the evening (start times to be negotiated to suit the group). I know I’ll have some beginners as well as those with many years of experience, but I know I can design classes to suit both.
If you’ve got any questions just ask!

Their adverts are often accompanied by pictures of them in very skimpy bikinis too! Not something that I feel is suitable for a spiritual practice, but that’s just my opinion. To perform yoga asana we first need a firm base. Unfortunately a soft sandy beach does not give us the firm foundations we need. However, have a look at this picture of me on the beach in Cuba. (Please note no bikini shots!)

I found a lifeguard’s station made out of palm trees to use for Virabhadrasana 1 (warrior 1), which actually works quite well. The front leg is helped to a right angle by resting on a cross bar and the trunk is helped to vertical by lifting up a vertical post. The trick is getting the pubic bones in really close to keep the pelvis upright. So it’s not impossible to do yoga on a sandy beach after all!

1. Choose a style of yoga- see my previous blog on “The first qualification for being a yoga teacher“

2. Find out whether a teacher has been trained with a basic 200 hour course, or a course that ran over many years. Yes, you really can go on a holiday and come back with a certificate accredited by the ‘Yoga Alliance’ (and other similar organisations) that enables you to call yourself a teacher and start working.

3. Ask why your teacher started yoga. Is it because they used to be a dancer and are naturally flexible? Or because they had back or health problems that they have managed? Which is most relevant to you?

4. Research your teacher if you can. This is where a website is useful! You may be too shy to ask but you can find stuff out about them through their site. If they have been teaching for a very long time this is usually a good sign too.

5. Some people say ‘find a teacher you like’ but I don’t think it’s really necessary to ‘like’ them as if they were going to be your friend. A teacher is different from a friend. However, it is helpful if you can respect them. This could be for many different reasons. I think that if you respect their teaching you are much more likely to remember what they tell you.

6. Do you benefit from their classes? Sounds obvious? But this is different from ‘enjoying’ their class. It might not be ‘fun’ as such, but can you feel that it has done you some good? Which is most important to you?
